The day marks the end of slavery across the British Empire on 1 August 1834. This day is a national holiday that is generally a time when family and friends take time to enjoy each others company. Visually vibrant, the national colors of black, green and gold livens the atmosphere as people brandish these colors on the garments, accessories or motor vehicles. Symbolism is huge, as is seen in the display of the flag, blaring of music, parades, and the recognition of the day by the government. Emancipation day leads into Independence Day on the 6th of August. This one week period is filled with non-stop festivities.
